THE OLD WEIGH

The Old Weigh is a refill shop (and more) and opened in February 2020. I started working there in 2021 and realised that I’d somehow fallen into a job that felt like it was made for me! I’ve always been conscious of the environment and love baking so The Old Weigh was just perfect for me. I loved my job, loved the customers and was passionate about what it offered Pickering so when the owner told me that it was going to close, I put on my Big Girl Pants and took it over in March 2023 and haven’t looked back.

So, The Old Weigh offers a wide selection of food produce including flour, sugar, cereal, dried fruit, nuts, pulses, herbs and spices, as well as a dedicated gluten free section. The shop also boasts a variety of locally sourced food and drink including Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, Rafi’s spice kits, local apple juice, over 15 loose leaf teas and coffees, pasta, honey and jams. We stock a range of eco-friendly household products and toiletries, which are also available on refill, saving you money and reducing plastic waste.

Most of the time we have a Recipe of the Week on offer where all the dry ingredients are weighed out ready for you in a pack, along with the recipe, for you to bake at home with a few of your store cupboard ingredients. Christmas cake packs are available and also food tech ingredients for the local schools, something which parents find very helpful as it’s a cost effective way of getting just what you need.

We welcome pre-orders via Facebook, instagram, phone or email and we can also offer delivery.

But I like to think of The Old Weigh as more than just a refill shop. Yes you can come and do your food and household refills, reducing single-use plastic, but we pride ourselves on the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place where people can come where they aren’t going to be rushed, we help them, we have a chat and often a good laugh. Life nowadays is always so rushed, we like to be able to take time with our customers – you just don’t know what’s going on in their lives or if you’re the only person that they are going to see that day.

I personally love hearing peoples reactions when they walk into the shop, they often comment on the lovely smell, it takes some back to their childhood and tourists wish that they had a shop like it near them.

I’m a Pickering girl and have always loved my home town but now owning a business here has put the icing on the cake. I love that feeling first thing on a morning as the town is waking up. I love that everyone knows each other and that there’s such a feeling of community.

I hope that The Old Weigh will continue to take me through to my retirement, I so love my job and can’t imagine being anywhere else, no day is the same and I have the best customers.
